NYC opinions ?
Hi everyone!
I'm planning to move to NYC in January 2026, but before I start lookin around for roommates or apartments, l'd love some advice on which neighborhoods (or boroughs) might be the best fit for me.
A bit about me: I'm 25F years old, born and raised in the Bay Area, working in an IVF lab. I'm lookin for a place that's very diverse with a lot of culture (food, community, arts) and I'll prob be commuting either to Long Island or Midtown. For reference , I’m from the city (SF) specifically the mission district, so I’m hoping to find anything similar to that part of sf !
Here are some of the things I'm looking for in a neighborhood / place:
- Affordable rent (or reasonable for what NYC is)
- Safe, I want to feel comfortable walking around, especially at night
- Nightlife options (bars, live music, casual and interesting spots to hang out)
- food spots — ethnic restaurants, cool cafes, loca hidden gems
- Access to water views or any views and some nice walking areas, places to get outside without needing to drive (not important thou)
- Good transit access to either Long Island or Midtown to make the commute manageable
If you've moved from the Bay Area/SF, or lived through that transition, l'd love to hear your comparisons: what you miss, what surprised you, what you adjusted to.
Thank you in advance! :))
