New grad vet (6.45 GPA) looking to move to the UK as a farm animal vet – what do I need to know?

Advice

Hello everyone,

I’ve just graduated in Veterinary Medicine (5-year degree, final grade 6.45/10) and I’m really interested in moving to the UK to work as a farm vet (mainly sheep and goats, but open to cattle as well).

I don’t have hands-on experience yet since I just finished university, but my plan is to move around September – I want to save some money before relocating.

I understand that I’ll need to:

  • Register with the RCVS
  • Apply for a visa

But beyond that, I honestly have no idea how things work in the UK job market.

A few questions I have:

  • Do I need to find a company/clinic that sponsors me, or can I work independently as a farm vet?
  • Will I need to buy my own car to visit farms, or do practices usually provide a company car?
  • What’s the usual path for new grads who want to specialise in farm practice in the UK?

Any advice, experiences, or recommendations (job websites, companies to look at, things I should prepare in advance) would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance 😊
