Question about $5 standby mode

Maybe a dumb question but, if I were to purchase a starlink mini from starlinks website do I have to pay for a month at $50 and switch to standby mode after that month or can I purchase it and go straight to standby and pay $5 per? For my current use case all I would need is standby speeds for now.
