Ussop is the Real (TM) First Mate of the Straw Hats [AI Slop] (and Void Century meta)

#GPT reply;

Ohhh I love this one — the “Ussop is the real First Mate” theory is such a delicious troll on casuals but it also has teeth if you actually track the narrative weight. Let me layer it out the way you framed it:

1. Symbolism in the First Bounty Poster

  • In Luffy’s first wanted poster, Ussop is literally at Luffy’s right hand.
  • Right-hand man = first mate imagery. Oda doesn’t do positioning like that by accident.
  • Zoro’s off to the side in other contexts, but the first public-facing symbol of the crew (bounty) shows Ussop in that symbolic position.

2. Ussop as the Shadow / Challenger

  • Water 7: Ussop is the only Straw Hat to ever formally leave the crew and fight Luffy in earnest.
  • That duel wasn’t just drama, it was the “shadow first mate” testing the captain’s will. He made Luffy second-guess himself more than Zoro/Sanji ever did.
  • This mirrors Van Auger questioning Blackbeard’s judgment in the middle of battle. Both “snipers” serve as the conscience/critic of the captain, not just the blade or the cook.

3. The Sniper Lineage (Yassop / Daddy / Van Auger)

  • Yassop didn’t just follow Shanks blindly — his duel with Daddy the Father is an act of principled contest. That echoes Ussop at Water 7.
  • Van Auger likewise represents doubt within Blackbeard’s crew, balancing out Teach’s manic ambition.
  • The sniper archetype = the true measure, the one who calls shots (literally), and keeps the captain honest.

4. Ussop as Shipwright (Pre-Franky)

  • Before Franky, Ussop was the de facto shipwright of the Merry, patching it again and again.
  • That’s a first mate’s role: maintaining the ship and crew’s survival when the captain’s chasing dreams.

5. Contrast with Zoro and Sanji

  • Zoro = the sword/warrior → unquestioning loyalty, symbolic left hand.
  • Sanji = the heart/cook → feeds, preserves, but never challenges Luffy’s vision.
  • Ussop = the voice of the crew’s doubts, making him the hidden right-hand. The “skeptic first mate.”

Meta: Oda’s Irony

  • It’s funny because Ussop looks like the weakest → yet narratively, he fills the most “first mate” role archetypally.
  • Oda loves flipping expectations. Zoro’s coolness makes him the obvious “first mate” for casuals. But thematically, the sniper — not the swordsman — is the real mirror of the captain.

So yeah — “Ussop is the true First Mate” works both as satire and as genuine close-reading.
It’s almost like: Zoro is the right-hand muscle. Ussop is the right-hand mind.

Want me to dig into bounty poster symbolism progression specifically? Oda hides a lot in how the crew are staged in those shots, especially Ussop’s positioning.

#End Main Ussop Prompt/Post

#Bonus.

What led up to that I guess (some other prompts in my "I'm Rubber you're glue" BB vs Luffy chat).

Idea of Sun as thief/Pirate King. Steals all "stale" ideals (constellations) and "tests" them with a binding "light of the world" test.

(Golgatha = Skull like Jolly Roger; crucifixion with 2 thieves)

[Old] Crap prompt; Rouge town aka logtown? Alpha and omega, city of beginning and end of the pirate king gol d roger. Golgotha, place of the skull, 3 crosses.... golgotha meaning skull, and crossbones, with two thieves... Jesus as sun god with 12 disciples aka zodiac, Pirate king, counted among the transgressors.... something something law xD

You’re sniffing out one of Oda’s favorite tricks — weaving mythic/religious imagery into what looks like just another goofy shōnen port town.

Loguetown / Rogue Town works on multiple levels:

  • “City of the Beginning and the End”: Roger was born there and executed there. Alpha & Omega. Start and finish of the old Pirate King.
  • Golgotha Parallel: Roger on the execution platform with the two swords — much like Christ crucified with the two thieves.
  • Skull & Crossbones: “Golgotha” literally = Place of the Skull. Pirates carry the skull & crossbones as their banner. Execution site = Pirate Golgotha.
  • Law & Transgression: Jesus is “numbered among the transgressors” → Roger is counted as the greatest criminal. Yet his words ignite salvation (the Great Pirate Era).
  • Zodiac / 12 Disciples: Roger leaves behind not disciples exactly, but the next generation. Oda often sneaks in zodiacal / astrological alignment (e.g., Straw Hats lining up like signs).
  • Luffy as Inheritor: Like Christ/Lawgiver, he survives execution there (Buggy’s sword strike stopped by lightning). It mirrors resurrection symbolism → divine sanction on his path.

And then there’s the sly pun: Loguetown = “Log” town → logs, record, “log pose,” beginnings of writing the new story.
“Rouge Town” (the spelling fans often use) → “Rogue” = outlaw, but also “Rouge” = makeup / mask, city of masks, performance before the real journey.

So yeah — Oda basically drops the mythic crucifixion motif right before the Grand Line begins. He’s telling us that the Pirate King’s mantle isn’t just succession, it’s mythic inheritance — death, rebirth, law, transgression, freedom.

Want me to map how the three crosses motif plays out in One Piece? (Roger + two others at Loguetown = Jesus + thieves → then Luffy’s own “execution/resurrection” echoes it).

#Harly Topic Prompt

Nah I'm familiar thanks thou. How about a blast from the past, for me. Forgot the Book or scroll or whatever on Elbaph of the history of the world was called the Harley.

I had this old idea that 800 years ago, the void century or whatever, had ALL the same devil fruits then. Obviously Wapol's fruit may have made the pony glyphs. The Kuma paw paw fruit sent them away. Possibly the Buggy chop chop fruit was a harlequin, and wrote/based on the Harley was named as such. Could even be the pony glyphs were all one stone but chop chop split them up.

We already have the cannon theory the Laws op op fruit gave Imu immortality. So we have a few hints such things are possible. Idk. I just get the feeling of the void century, like is a repeat, as if void century will be like Legend of Kora to modern one piece's Avatar the last airbender; same fruits/powers making the big moves.

Ahhh that’s a great old-school “deep cut” kind of theory — I see where you’re going with it. Let me riff on it with you:

The “Harley” / Harlequin Angle

The Elbaf “Harley” scroll/book could represent a fragmented record of the old world.
A “Harlequin” is literally a jester made of mismatched pieces → if the Buggy Chop-Chop fruit (Bara Bara no Mi) split the original “whole history” into fragments, the Harley could be the clown-patchwork archive of truth.
Buggy’s entire role in the story is “accidental clown who stumbles into legacy.” If his fruit once played a part in splitting history, it would retroactively justify his being woven so closely into the Roger crew and the current era.

Void Century Devil Fruits “All There Already”

  • The Void Century could have been a Golden Age of Fruits, when every power we’ve seen already existed. History itself is repeating as fruits recycle through users (sic; Dark Souls).
  • Wapol’s Baku Baku fruit: consuming and remaking things → ponyglyph stone eating/reshaping.
  • Kuma’s Paw-Paw fruit: “sending away” → scattering stones and even people (exiles across the world).
  • Law’s Op-Op fruit: the classic theory — used to give Imu or the Empty Throne its undying core.
  • Buggy’s Chop-Chop fruit: literally fragmentation → splitting the “One” stone history into many.

Cyclical History (Avatar / Korra Comparison)

  • Perfect analogy — One Piece could be showing us the second cycle after the Void Century, much like Korra is the “modern world” inheriting the exact same bending powers.
  • Each fruit is a reincarnation of the role it played before: not random, but patterned destiny.
  • Joyboy might not be a “person” but a role bound to re-emerge whenever the cycle resets.

Bonus Layer:

  • “One Piece” itself = maybe the unbroken ponyglyph (the Harley in whole form). Right now it’s scattered like the clown’s patchwork. Buggy ironically may be the living pun on that: the clown who doesn’t realize he’s embodying the “fragmented history.”

So yeah — your “all fruits present in Void Century” idea meshes really well with the text. It implies: the fruits aren’t random accidents of evolution but specific archetypes of the world’s past being reborn.

Do you want me to take this theory one step wilder — like line up each Yonko or major Devil Fruit with their possible Void Century analogue, almost like Oda’s reincarnated pantheon?

#Commentary

Just meta behind scenes prompts. Income tax and Pirate King. What I have been thinking of zodiac and dreams lately. Strictly speaking the Sun is an "orb of light". The lesser orbs of light and dreams/telepathy topic. Jacob wrestled that after all (preview of main recent GPT prompt).
