Will I ever sleep?

My son is 3, and he is Level 3 ASD. He has always had sleep difficulties, since birth he hasn’t been a great sleeper. However since January of this year the sleep issues have gotten out of control.

He can take upward of an hour to fall asleep at night, and we need to lay with him and rub him until he goes. He then wakes up usually after 2-3 hours and he will sometimes stay awake for the rest of the night, or other times he will stay awake until 5/6am and then fall asleep again.

We have seen a doctor, he has been prescribed melatonin and phenergan to minimal effect. Nothing seems to help. I don’t know what to do. I work full-time and I am getting virtually no sleep at night even if we co-sleep.

Does this end? How is everyone surviving? I am just at a loss for what to do. I don’t know if I need advice or encouragement or just to know it’ll eventually be easier.
