How do we feel on the points driven mission loadouts?

Discussion

I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of it compared to the "run what ya brung" of Battle Brothers. It feels arbitrary and gamey and doesn't seem to have a very strong narrative hook.

A marine Sargent is going to tell their marine squad they can't bring the nice level IV armor and medium LMG they have back on the ship because....why exactly? We brough too many snipers and rockets for the other guys? The gear progression system in Battle Brothers felt right to the narrative, in that the stronger weapons and armor you found, you just use them because they're better and that's what mercs would do.

It would be interesting to perhaps have some kind of hybrid system where the drop ship capacity dictates how many squaddies and vehicle tonnage you can bring, but not limit you so much on armor quality, weapons, and gadget loadouts.

This is all caveated with the fact that we haven't seen the meta progression and narrative of the campaign map which may justify this system better. Perhaps there are ship upgrades that increase points you can bring per mission, rare armor and weapons with good stats but lower point costs, etc. You can see a bit of that potential with Sy's unique discount talent.

Also to note, the Battle Brothers system wasn't necessarily perfect either. The enemies scaled and if you got behind the equipment quality curve you were boned. And it was a scaling system with no real insight given to the player. Perhaps the Menace system will lead to more balanced mission design?
