The horror late bus

I’m a kid-haver and so I catch all my movies at least a season after the hype wanes. It’s sad to miss the party, but I feel like it gives me a more level opinion of the big movies that come out. Anyone else find this to be true? If so, what’s the biggest discrepancy you’ve noticed in a horror movie’s quality post-hype?
