Questions about the comeplete Pali canon

Hello, i was interested in buying the comeplete pali canon in english, but before doing that and being dissapointed i wanted to check it out online first and the pdfs too. Long story short is it a good book? Are there any better cannons out there than the Pali one?Is it a high quality manual handbook that gives you step by step directions how to achieve specific states of awareness? Or is it mostly just professors pontificating on stuff they dont know much about like philosophy books? Or is it like the talmud which is mostly just rabbies giving their opinions and interpretations of the historic texts but arent the texts themselves. Thanks in advance.
