I saw this article the other day and got me thinking. Over the last 11 years roughly . I had bought bitcoin starting in 2013 . I bought from places like local bitcoin.com , and many sketchy atm’s across the city back then that were inside of liquor stores and head shops and grow stores (sketchy) . Some of the local bitcoins trades were cash in person with the websites escrow system but the people themselves sometimes looked sketchy but back then I didn’t care. My transactions were all above board as far as I was my end of things, other than that I have no way to know. And didn’t know any better as we met in safe public places for the trades.

After reading the article above it got me wondering. Since that bitcoin I started acquiring back then through legitimate transactions , based on what I’ve read could unknown to me be tied to “dirty” money and since it’s been locked away in my hardware wallet for a decade or more . I would never know. That is untill I hypothetically send it over to a centralized exchange like coinbase USA and then it gets frozen before I could even sell it .

It’s like this . Imagine you sell a random item on Facebook marketplace and you sell it for cash in person at a local meet up and than person hands you a few $20 bills. And you then deposit that in the bank and the banks says well, 5 transactions ago that cash was used for a transaction we define as “dirty” so your money is now frozen. I think it’s absurd, but that’s what could happen here

So my question is. Is there a way to run my hardware bitcoin wallet address through an online risk calculation tool that can analyze where the bitcoin came from before I legitimately acquired it to make sure mine is not “dirty” before I send it to an exchange for a sale?

I’m probably just being OCD about a non issue. But this article just popped up on my phone the other day as I’m looking into cashing out for the first time in over a decade.
