ADHD meds causing light sensitivity, or making me more aware of my Autism and how much I hate bright lights?
Recently got diagnosed with ADHD and awaiting autism assessment. I'm on 18mg of Concerta since I just started and my body is taking time to adjust. I was also on an antidepressant that my psych took me off because it was giving me vision issues. But I think the Concerta is also causing slight vision issues - namely, light sensitivity.
I've always hated bright lights and I definitely felt that if I was under fluorescent lights in a mall too long I would get overstimulated - common ADHD thing but I also suspected autism because of how easily and constantly it happened. But it was usually just feeling emotionally overwhelmed, angry, and drained.
Now, if I'm under the same kind of fluorescent lights for a few hours, I get a headache. The noise and people and everything feels overwhelming much faster than it did before.
And now i'm wondering...is this a case of the ADHD meds causing me to develop light sensitivity? Or has my ADHD symptoms being dealt with made the potential autism more apparent? Or both?
I definitely feel more easily overstimulated in general on the meds.
My vision is also slightly blurry especially up close. So the meds are definitely having some effect. But i'm not sure if the light sensitivity is from that or just being more easily overstimulated. I've also been having issues with sleep, for various complex reasons. That can't be helping either. It's hard to pin down what is causing what.
I'm kinda bummed out if it's the Concerta because otherwise i've responded pretty well to it. Concerta makes me feel SO emotionally regulated and balanced, and I have actual energy and focus.
I'll obviously be talking more to my psychiatrist about this, but anyone else have experience with this?
