Is Airbnb a legitimate option for a 3 month stay in NYC?

I've heard rumours of last minute cancellations being a problem, but is this actually true or just a rumour? Has anyone had firsthand experience? If so, how did you find it?

Is there another alternative that's similarly priced for a stay like this?
