Is it fair to ask our remodeling company to hold off on starting work while we wait to see if my husband has cancer?

Long story short: my husband had a minor stroke in early September. When they did all of his imaging, they had an "incidental finding" of a mass in his thyroid. No one who has looked at the scans is being very committal about what it could be, but it is large (just over 2 cm) and our PCP warned him that benign or malignant, it most likely is going to have to come out. My husband has an ultrasound next week where we should get more information.

Right when he had the stroke, we had been smack in the middle of getting estimates for a remodel in our master bathroom. We had been talking to a company we liked, and had gotten an estimate that was more than fair. They have contacted me a couple of times following up on the estimate, and first I explained about the stroke, and they understood. Now, we are in this other situation where, if things are bad with this thyroid mass (and I'm not trying to think they are, but they could be), I absolutely cannot have my husband trying to recover from surgery, and possibly going through cancer treatment, while the house is in disarray because the bathroom is being remodeled. Our master bathroom is only accessible by going up the main stairs and through our master bedroom, and we have no guest bedroom in the house, so minimizing disruption is going to be challenging.

They originally wanted to start work in late October or early November. I want to postpone starting the work till early January. By then, we'll know what's what, and even if things are not okey-dokey, we should be in more-stable place. But I don't know if this is a fair thing to ask for? We have not paid the deposit yet but can do that at any time. Any advice on how to proceed with this is appreciated. Our master bathroom is the original from 1989, when the house was built, and it definitely needs an overhaul, but now all this other stuff is happening, and obviously my husband's health needs to be the priority.
