Transitioning into BI/Data Analyst roles — looking for advice on strategy

recently laid off

Hey everyone,

I recently lost my job where I had been working for ~2 years in the Swiss maritime sector focused on Business Intelligence and operational analytics.

During my time there I:

Built dashboards in Power BI & Tableau that reduced reporting time by ~40%

Used SQL & Python for data cleaning, analysis, and automating workflows

Worked on projects like customer churn prediction, flight delay analysis, and sales forecasting (end-to-end models + dashboards)

Completed certifications like the Google BI Certificate and IBM Data Science Certificate

Now, I’m using this transition period to move more deliberately into BI Analyst / Data Analyst roles.

My questions for the community:

  1. For someone with BI + ML project experience, what kinds of companies are the best fit — service MNCs, analytics consultancies, or product/startups?

  2. How can I present my projects as business-impact work instead of just technical exercises?

  3. For those who’ve gone through job loss → how did you balance applying for faster-moving roles (Capgemini, Genpact, Fractal, Tiger) vs. aiming at big names (Google, Amazon, Airbus)?

I’m staying motivated and see this as a chance to reposition myself for growth. Would love to hear from anyone who’s been through something similar.

Thanks in advance 🙌
