Just experienced one of the most magical train rides in the world
The journey to Ella through Sri Lanka's hill country is absolutely breathtaking.
What makes it so special?
- Rolling misty mountains as far as the eye can see
- Emerald green tea plantations stretching across hillsides
- The famous Nine Arch Bridge
- Windows wide open with the cool mountain breeze
- Photo ops literally every 5 minutes
tips for anyone planning this,
- Book your tickets IN ADVANCE (especially if you want a window seat) – first class is around 3000 LKR
- The most scenic stretch is between Hatton and Haputale, so stay awake for that
- Bring snacks and water – it's a 6-7 hour journey from Kandy (or 3-4 hours from Nuwara Eliya)
- Go early morning if possible for clearer views
- Don't stress if you can't get the full journey – even Nanuoya to Ella (2.5 hours) is stunning
Warning: The train can get packed, especially during peak season. If you don't get a reserved seat, be prepared to stand. But honestly? Even standing with the doors open, feeling the mountain air and watching the tea pickers work – it's worth every minute.

And if you're planning to go, ask me anything.
December is the peak season. Hurry up guys !
