Is there ever a lore reason given to us on why hogwarts has to be secret other than “muggles are annoying”?

Discussion

Hagrid says in the first book when asked why hogwarts is secret that because muggles would ask for their help for everything and be dependent, but that seems silly, what if there was magic to cure cancer, and it was being kept secret. If they were going to go this angle, why not give us an antagonist in the form of a bitter Muggle who learns of hogwarts and becomes maniacally obsessed with “proving” it’s real, or anything besides having the reason to hide the school be a reason other than that “they’re annoying”.
