[M4F] Son must be the man of the house. A historical mom/son roleplay.

I’ve had the idea for some time now for a story set in the pioneer days in the United States, so here it goes!

We were all so excited. It was almost time to prove up our claim and white that dad would have the free and clear title to the 160 acres of his pioneer claim. It hadn’t been easy, mom, dad and my siblings out here in the middle of nowhere, scratching out a living, but we had made it and had even prospered.

It’s true, I’m 18 and had every right to head out my own to try and find my fortune, but dad had taken me to one side and explained how he could really use my help making his new farm a successful one, and if I promised to stay till he proved up, then I could go anywhere I pleased with his blessing and a little reward to help me whatever my next adventure would be.

So we worked, long and hard, and finally we were almost to the five year anniversary that would mark the end of the land being a claim and it would be transformed into dads farm, free and clear. Then, the unthinkable occurred. Just as winter was coming to an end, dad caught the flu and passed. It was so sudden and all of us were in shock.

Shortly after mom talked to me in the barn, and explained that the homestead claim paperwork was all in dad’s name and we were about to lose everything. The government man was due in a couple weeks, and with dad dead there was nothing we could do, the government man would throw us off the farm, we’d be left with nothing but what we could haul in the wagon.

That’s how it came be that I’m now looking down the road constantly, waiting for the government man to show up. Mom and I decided that we had only one slim chance to keep the farm. I had to pretend to be dad while the government man was here and get the signed paperwork so we can keep the farm.
