How much damage can a human shield take before dying?

Simple enough, in the first game I never properly used the human shield, mostly by accident when I had a empty gun and was panicking and tried to grab another gun, so it was never used well by me, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it used properly in media or in any videos, so how much damage can one take?
