He (28M) ended our 2-year serious relationship out of nowhere after a career setback. I (25F) feel so lost, looking for an explanation to why did this come out of nowhere.

Relationships

I am a 25F, I had been dating this guy since last two years(28M). We have been exclusive and very serious about each other since the very start, very much in love as well. For the initial one year we were in the same city, almost lived together only and more than past one year it has been long distance because he shifted back home. We come from different states, different religions(Sikhism and Hinduism), different professions. We always knew getting our parents to agree would be a problem but we thought we will do good in our respective careers and they will somehow agree. Mind you, marriage is not even on the table for any of us for next two years at least.

He recently got results of an exam that he had been preparing for. You can say his future depended on the result coz he has been struggling with his career since past 4.5 years and the result being positive was very important for him to move ahead with his career. (It was NEET PG, he is a doctor). But the result did not come in his favour and his entire world kinda shattered. So his brother who lives outside India asked him to try going abroad and try his luck there, but there is a catch, his brother asked him to start talking to girls of his community over there and get married to someone so that his entry abroad becomes easier.

He started thinking about this and other options he had and although he decided against it (kinda still in the process of deciding), he broke up with me within 15 days of the declaration of his result and this discussion. He told me that his parents would not agree and he does not want to fight with them for me (He had a discussion with his parents asking about if they would ever agree to a girl of his choice and whether or not that girl can be from a different community etc etc). Break up was never on the table before this, it just came out of nowhere, that too one day before my international trip(felt very selfish for him to do that, I had been planning this since months).

We did not talk the entire time I was there but he just texted me at the end of it if I returned safely or not. I could not control myself and asked him to not break up with me, and give it a try coz it’s very hard for me, so he started saying he doesn’t even know if we are right for each other and whether it’s worth it to disturb his peace and his parents peace for me. So I said okay let’s just keep things like this then, you go your way, I will go my way. As soon as I said this he asked me to give him some more time to think about this and everything else. He wants to decide whether or not he should stay in India, and whether or not we should stay together. He doesn’t really talk to me properly and it’s affecting my career, my physical and mental health.

I don’t know what will happen at the end of all this. I stay anxious all day long, and can’t study for an important upcoming exam. All this came out of nowhere, if I had the slightest idea this was gonna happen I would have prepared myself a bit. But this came out of nowhere; we had even met just a week before all this happened. Is it worth it for me to keep waiting or should I just try to move on. I just go through 100 different emotions all day, can’t focus on literally anything. Is it normal and fair for people to do this after being with someone for two years, that too in such an intimate relationship where you talk 5 times a day, what is this 180-degree flip so quickly. There were never any signs, we had our issues but we were really good together, he loved me a lot, always motivated and supported me and now everything seems to have changed.
