Journalism doesn’t require a major media outlet

You don’t need to get a job at a major or even minor news outlet. You just need to find a story, pursue it, and report it.

The media landscape has shifted, social media and video platforms like YouTube and twitch make it so anyone can gain a following. Yes, I realize this is more difficult and you’ll need to find sources for revenue if you want to do this one your own. I’m not saying it’s a magic bullet, but there are plenty of ways you can add value to your local community. Start small and build, yes it takes time but eventually you will succeed if you’re providing value. Do it as a side hustle to your 9-5, the world needs more unbiased sources of information, fill that void.

The other side of this is finding work with YouTubers rather than a media outlet. Most of them need teams of researchers to help produce content on a regular basis.

We are in a new world, which means the old rules no longer apply. The ones that adapt to this will succeed, the ones that don’t will fail.
