HDMI Switch-Splitter-Extender Nonsense
I have a stupid idea and am wondering if anyone has done something like this.
I have a few displays around the house, a mish-mash of brands, OSes, some are monitors, etc. I want to wire them up like a sports bar with one signal being sent to all of them at the same time. Source would be an Apple TV 4k in the basement, and maybe a gaming PC. I want to use HDMI 2.1 as much as possible for futureproofing, and give myself a couple extra inputs and outputs if I wanted to add more later.
Image below is my plan. Basically have an HDMI switch in the basement connected to my sources (controlled by an IR blaster via Home Assistant), connected to a 1 x 8 HDMI splitter, which then runs some optic HDMI cables, some HDMI-over-Cat6 extenders, to the displays around the house. I'd prefer to use Cat6 to use up my roll and drill smaller holes, but will do what's best. I've looked at matrix setups, but they're expensive and I have no interest in using this system to show different signals on different TVs.
Ignore downscaling, EDID, speaker configs, HDR, all the extra bits, and assume I'm connecting entirely to identical 4k displays.... is this a terrible idea? Am I introducing too many relays to the point that you'd expect the signal will degrade and crap out by the time it gets to some of the screens? Has anyone made this work before?
