First Time in Civilian Aircraft Maintenance

I did my 4 years as a sheetmetal tech in the airforce on 135's and have started being contacted by recruiters from Aerotek, Veterans Alliance, and JSFirm. Most of these offers are contract jobs where they tell me I need to make a decision in 24 hours or less. Is this normal and are the "contract to direct hire" offers a scam or has anyone had success with that?
