Is Alex Dempsey supposed to be awkward in Wayward?

I haven't seen Mae Martin in anything else so I'm not sure if it's just awkward acting for the character is supposed to be this way.

I watched it for toni Collette and she definitely didn't disappoint but nothing really stands out in the series. The start was really good but it fell flat for me somewhere after episode 5.
