📘 Friday Beginner Basics: What’s an ETF, Really?

📘 Beginner Basics

Heya LabFam, it’s Fridayyyy 🎉 We made it through the week, hope yours was solid!
Let’s learn something new together!

Q: So… what’s an ETF, really?
A: ETF stands for Exchange Traded Fund. It’s basically a basket of different stocks (or other assets) bundled together that you can trade like a regular stock.

Q: Why not just buy a stock instead?
A: With a stock, you’re tied to one company. With an ETF, you spread your exposure. Think of it like a playlist — one stock is a single song, an ETF is the whole playlist.

Q: Which ETFs do people actually talk about?
A: Some of the most common:

  • SPY → tracks the S&P 500 (500 biggest US companies)
  • QQQ → tracks the Nasdaq 100 (tech heavyweights)
  • XLK → tracks the tech sector

Q: Why does this matter for options?
A: A lot of options contracts are on ETFs. If you’ve looked at an options chain and seen SPY or QQQ, now you know why they’re everywhere.

👉 Quick question: If you could build your own “ETF playlist” of 5 stocks you love, which ones would make the cut?

Look out for next week Friday where we break down The S&P 500: what it really is, why it exists, and what’s inside it today.

We learn here. Not financial advice.
