Hugh and Katie breakup

Okay my obsession with this series is unhealthy, so please help my thinking. When do we actually think Hugh and Katie break up? We are assuming that Hugh finds out about Pierce on Halloween, so there goes his reasoning for why he can’t be with her. We read about him and Katie making out at Biddies during Johnnys rugby watch party, is that after Halloween? We also read about them dancing at the winter ball. So why would Hugh stay with Katie at that point?? If it’s because Lizzie is pushing him away because she doesn’t think she’s good enough for him, then that’s diabolical in terms of Hugh just staying with Katie. It only makes sense once he finds out to completely end that relationship, that according to Spotify snippets he isn’t very emotionally invested in. Why not just break up and be Lizzie’s friend and wait for her?

To be fair, im already extremely annoyed by this love square dynamic. Why not have had Hugh be single the whole time and allow him and Lizzie the opportunity to grow as individuals. Or even have him still kiss Katie on New Years, they go out on a few dates, piss off Feely/Lizzie but realize they’re better off as friends and that’s that. It seems way more damaging for two FMC (Katie and Lizzie) who both have extremely low self worth to have them both feel not chosen by Hugh.
