Typical Day with a Narcissistic Supervisor
I posted here before about my supervisor and reporting her to HR for the second time. Thanks for a the great advice. I may still report to EEOC. I do plan on notifying my supervisor's supervisor's supervisor just because my supervisor is so high up and I want real accountability. She already had a warning from her supervisor about her behaviour the first time. Now its a formal investigation. Here is the situation that did it.
My job has multiple buildings. I came into work. My laptop was having issues, I walked to another building for IT. All together it was less than an hour and a half. On my way back, I got a text from my coworker saying she is worried because she mentioned the office was quiet and my supervisor seemed upset I wasn't at my desk. I didn't even know she was in the office because she normally works for home. No, I didn't go check if she was in to inform her that I was going to IT. Anyway, I walk in and go to talk to my supervisor to let her know I was IT. She said that's fine. Not to worry and she was just chatting with the coworkers. She wasn't actually worried. If you can't tell her issues include micromanaging, bullying, microaggressions etc. Just all the hostile work environment ingredients. People are scared and cautious around her.
Then we start talking about an assignment. She's not happy with my recommendation but wants to proceed with doing it. I told her if she doesn't think its beneficial then I can brainstorm something else. (Its a good recommendation, she is just is scared of the feedback because its built on employee feedback of our team. We did a survey, of course the responses weren't positive.) Skipping some of the chat but she says my opinions have "no merit" and "that people come up to her and say they don't even know what I do here". I don't respond to any of that (I know she wants a reaction.) and start my next sentence with "In terms of the recommendations, would you like to....". This upsets her and before I leave she tells me send her a list of everything I've been working on. (She also told me to email her a recap of her own words she mentioned during the chat. She does this weird thing where she wants me to draft her emails based on her words. I'm not her assistant and she was also warned about this little power/control thing with the emails. It's weird.) I say okay and that once I check my emails, I will let her know everything I was working on. (I was out sick for 2 days.) My compliance also upset her because she emails me right after....
That this "isn't the first time she asked me to share what I'm doing and I responded with a question and never answered her." She told me that I need to use my judgement to development a training around her ideas. (But she wouldn't say what the goal of the training was. Me asking her and her not providing guidance is in the email thread.) Turns out she also emailed me seperately because she came by desk, at 10 am, to follow up on an email she sent at 9am. (She only stopped by because of my coworkers comment and she wanted to try to document it.) She said "I thought you were coming into the office today." The email goes on and on.
I just asked her if she was talking about today in regards to me not answering her. She said no, in the past.... (Umm...okay? And when?) And I clarified the email about me not being at my desk for documentation. In it I said "You thought I wasn't at work but we clarified..." This lady emailed me back, "Why would you assume I thought you weren't at work?" I just forwarded the whole chain to HR and spoke to them.
Sorry for typos. On my phone and annoyed but laughing because wth.
