AIO after being sexually harassed at work?

💼work/career

Throwaway becauseeee I’m already really uncomfortable about this situation and don’t even know if I should be posting it but here goes. Basically I (27F) work at a restaurant as a waitress. The restaurant is a small business owned by a family who immigrated here from a different country. Most of the kitchen staff are from that country and most only speak minimal English. The dishwasher (70ish? M) particularly speaks no English. When I first started I used to tell him thank you when he would buss one of my tables and he would always smile at me and I would smile back. I thought of it as a wholesome interaction and nothing more. I guess he got comfortable or took my kindness the wrong way because he started patting my butt as he would walk by sometimes or just poking me in the arm and stuff. It made me uncomfortable but I wasn’t trying to start any drama or make things weird or awkward or cause any commotion so I just wouldn’t say anything. I can recognize my lack of setting boundaries is what probably made him feel okay to continue doing stuff like this but it did make me uncomfortable and I mentioned it to a few coworkers (most of the servers are also young women who I have become comfortable with and made friends with) and my coworkers had also witnessed it themselves. Basically the last time this happened I could feel him standing behind me as I was restocking and he was putting dishes away and I could tell he was gonna touch my butt so I kinda turned away but he still very slowly and gently patted the underside of my butt, which was a first. I got super uncomfortable and just told him no and that was it. He walked away and so did I and I then mentioned it again to my coworkers. They ended up telling my boss who was out of the country at this time and he ended up texting me to ask what happened and I explained to him. I believe one of my coworkers had told him about this happening before and he talked to the dishwasher about it but this time he told me that he talked to him again and told him if this happens again he will lose his job. I know that is an appropriate response but i still feel uncomfortable and also guilty for stirring shit up and potentially being the cause of this older immigrant man who doesn’t speak English to lose his job. Anyways after this exchange with my boss (about 2 weeks ago) the touching and everything has stopped.

Where this becomes an issue again is truly my own fault and mistake. I never told anyone about this happening at work besides my coworkers. I didn’t tell anyone in my family or my therapist and lastly I didn’t tell my girlfriend who I’ve been with for over a year and a half. I was scared how she would react and withheld this information from her in fear of how angry she would be if she knew. I figured it was handled and that was that so she doesn’t need to know. She already struggles with me working late night hours and is anxious about people flirting with me or hitting on me at work (customers and coworkers) and I knew this would just make things worse and she would want me to quit and or get the dishwasher fired. Last night however she found out about the incident from reading the texts on my phone with my boss. She absolutely lost it with me freaking out screaming accusing me of cheating and being suspicious and weird and most of all angry that I kept it from her. She threatened to show up to my work and wanted to fight the dishwasher and my boss for allowing this but instead she ended up calling my work asking for my boss getting his number and exchanging texts with him about it. He didn’t say much to her besides what I already told him about it and apologized to her telling her it wouldn’t happen again. Now I feel like I have done her and myself soooo wrong because I went about this situation in a way that I would never advise anyone else to do. If I heard this situation happened to someone else I would say fuck the dishwasher fuck his comfort and his job cause a scene and tell him don’t ever touch my body like that. But when it’s happened to me it’s hard for me to speak up and advocate for myself. I also feel I should mention I have had experiences in the past when I worked at a very popular pizza chain, I was sexually harassed by an older coworker. I tried to report it so I didn’t have to work with him and was made to jump thru hoops only to have them reprimand me for not being willing to work with him and in turn ended with me quitting and them promoting him to the GM of that location (after the previous GM was fired around the same time due to sexually harassing me and other young women working there). It has left a bad taste in my mouth and probably given me an aversion to speaking up for myself in fear of not being heard and humiliating myself for nothing. So only the last time it happened at my current job I was able to try and set boundaries by saying no. But it should’ve been the first time and I should’ve told my girlfriend about it when it happened the first time. I regret my actions and now I’m in hot water because I have broken her trust and now need to find a new job. I have only worked here 6 months, and have just started really settling in. I’m not someone who likes to job hop and even if I wanted to there’s very few other job options around the area. This is my first serving job after being a barista for four years where I was making hardly enough money to survive and I don’t want to quit. I don’t want to stop working with all of my other coworkers who are great but I don’t want to jeopardize my relationship more than I already have. She wants me to work somewhere else and has texted my boss to ask why the dishwasher hasn’t already been fired and I just feel in the middle of it all. She also has said she wishes I would’ve taken this more seriously and filed something against him because this is all so not okay. I feel so uncomfortable and unsure what to do. I have to be at work in 2 hours and my girlfriend is not comfortable with me going back and im uncomfortable with being there at this point because of everything. She knows I need to work and don’t have any other options to make money right now though. So after all of that, would I be overreacting if I left my workplace due to the prior incidents with the dishwasher? Or what should I do?

P.s. if you are my girlfriend or any of my coworkers reading this no you didn’t 😭😭😭😭😭
