1 year old hates his high chair, and wants to walk and eat. How can I make it more fun?

My 1 year old hates his high chair. Trying to make him sit in it leads to crying and huge tantrums. I am having to wait until I can put the food next to him or else he is throwing it across the room.

He wants to eat standing up, or running around while I spoon feed him. It’s messy, the food gets everywhere. Our dining room used to have a rug but not anymore. He also doesn’t want to be in one room and he also wants to deliberately play with his food.

I have been doing more sensory fun play with him, peas in ziploc bags, homemade play doh and other play he likes but sitting down and eating is not happening.

For me him being able to sit down and eat matters because it’s an important habit to built early. I am even contemplating testing out different high chairs.

Or is this just a phase?
