Upscaling semi-realistic book characters

I've attempted several upscale/enhancer workflows and models and each has tried to change my semi-realistic book character into a real boy! Anyone have any suggestions as to how to successfully upscale/enhance a semi-realistic character and maintain the character's identity? TIA
