Can we change the firmware of router to any other available firmware or third party firmware (if there is any).

Guys i have got an old D-Link router which has a very old firmware and doesn't support many things such as wifi repeater, Virtual servers and many other things. So I wanted to know if i can change the firmware of that D-Link router so it can do many other things. NOTE: Its a 2.4ghz router.
