Aitah for pulling out my teacher for hating me
I(17f) go to school and have this teacher, Mrs. TikTok, who’s always been passive-aggressive toward me. I’ve always felt like she didn’t like me, but I tried to ignore it. I call her Mrs. TikTok because she’s one of those teachers with a TikTok account who posts a lot, and her classroom has that “aesthetic” look.
On the other hand, there’s a teacher I really like, Mrs. Mary. One day, I brought cupcakes for a class party. Unfortunately, not many people wanted mine because another girl had brought the same brand, and hers got eaten instead. I didn’t mind too much, but I ended up with a lot of leftovers.
I decided to give Mrs. Mary one of the cupcakes because I knew it was her favorite type. Thinking she might be in the teacher’s lounge, I waited outside. While standing there, I overheard Mrs. TikTok talking to another teacher. At first, I wasn’t paying attention, but then I heard her say:
"Oh, I have this student named Parker. She’s so weird and super loud. Honestly, I hate her. I know ‘hate’ is a strong word, but I just don’t like her. To deal with it, I’ve started focusing on things I do like about her, so I don’t visibly show my dislike."
Then the other teacher asked, "What don’t you like about her?"
Mrs. TikTok replied, "She’s just annoying. She’s one of those kids who stays quiet until someone talks to her, and then she won’t stop talking. Her voice is so thick and blunt—it irritates me. But to keep myself from showing it, I remind myself of her good traits. For example, she always dresses nicely for school, gets her work done, and participates in class. But honestly, she’s my least favorite student."
Hearing all of that crushed me. I had always felt like she didn’t like me, but hearing her talk about me like that hurt deeply. I stood there, holding my cupcakes, and started crying. I know not everyone will like me, but I try so hard in her class.
I walked away and decided to hand out the cupcakes in the cafeteria. There were 15 left, so I gave 13 away and kept 3 for myself. Giving them out helped me calm down a bit.
Later, I found Mrs. Mary, gave her a cupcake, and told her what I had overheard. She told me not to worry about it. But the next class I had was with Mrs. TikTok.
When I walked in, she said hi, but it felt fake because she was also greeting another student. I looked her in the eye and said, "You really don’t like me," before bursting into tears.
She seemed surprised and asked what I meant. I told her I overheard what she said in the teacher’s lounge. She responded by telling me I wasn’t supposed to hear that and shouldn’t have been listening to other people’s conversations.
Now I’m wondering, was I wrong for overhearing her conversation?
