P52 laptop replacement advice
Hi Reddit! I got super helpful advice years ago with my last Lenovo purchase so am looking for insight again.
I currently have: Thinkpad P52 from 2019
- 15.6” 1920x1080 screen
- 8th gen intel core i7-8850H with vPro
- NVIDIA Quadro P2000
- 32GB RAM (16GB DDR 2400MHz originally + Crucial 16GB DDR 2666 MT/s installed 2019)
- 2x Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB (installed 2024)
Wondering:
- Is it worth getting a P1, P16 or P14 as a replacement? Which?
- Can I transfer my installed SSDs?
- Is it worth it to transfer my installed RAM? Or get another new one?
I use it for:
- Adobe Suite (Premiere, AE, Media Encoder, Photoshop, InDesign)—for video editing I use proxies and am okay with rendering things overnight for clients so I don’t need absolute “top of the line” performance. I am a video editor and (2D) animator as a main side hustle (freelancing, not primary income but sizeable!)
- Usual working adult computer stuff (internet, Spotify, teams, etc)
Other info about me:
-
I really like the portability of a laptop, because I split my time WFH between my and my partner’s house multiple times a week
-
Am clumsy and really dislike MacOS so I don’t want a MacBook Pro (repairability and durability of Lenovo + Windows OS are big bonuses for me!)
-
I’m curious about virtual desktops and whether this might be a solution for the above? I’m usually in spots with good wifi!
-
Battery life and weight are not as key for me
-
Would love for this to last at least another 5 years of similar work. Really happy with how my P52 has done over the years.
-
Hoping to spend under $2000, a lower price tag is very enticing for me!
Thanks in advance for the advice!
