Is it just me or is digivolving harder in time stranger?

Keep in my mind I'm only 7 hrs on, but I've been struggling with understanding this all works. I feel like in the cyber sleuth games it was a bit more linear, but the digivolving and dedigivolving in this game seems so more complicated and complex that I can't rap my head around it, and am struggling to love the game. Can anyone help me with this? Or will this be fixed or be easier later in the game?
