senior aunt with cc debt

Debt

Hi everyone,

My family recently found out that my wife's aunt (who's 79) has basically no money and about $3K in credit card debt - it's a long story but sounds like a combination of her being a little confused about some things and also getting scammed :-(. The good news is she currently lives in a low-income apartment building for senior folks, her rent is well below her social security payment, and my in-laws are working to help get her setup on SNAP, etc, so once we get this credit card situation resolved the situation should improve - she was basically just scraping by but all her extra social security income was just going to the monthly interest on this card.

What I'm here to ask about is what we can feasibly expect or how to handle negotiations with the CC company? My mother in law was just gonna pay it, my sister in law suggested asking the CC company to negotiate a better rate, and I'm over here wondering if it makes sense to just ignore it and/or declare bankruptcy since I don't think they can garnish SS? I don't know if there's a clear-cut answer here, or if not, who we should even call or ask for better advice? I am in my 30s and do not know very much about this stage of life. Thanks all!
