Places similar to Puerto Vallarta?

I'm trying to plan a family trip this winter for my parents, brother and nephews who are based out of Vancouver. I've been to PV twice and love it, but want to try somewhere different while not too long of a flight from Vancouver. I haven't been to Cancun but it doesn't appeal to me since it's all big resorts. Somewhere with a nice town and some local culture, decent prices, and a good beach would be ideal. Can't think of anywhere else better than PV at the moment...
