Brothers and sisters, am I fucked?

Ok, I applied to a position last Monday and received an email Tuesday telling me I applied late as they’ve began the interviewing process but my resume caught their eye and they’ll let me know if their current pool of candidates falls through. (This was so nice, the recruiter was really kind)

On Thursday they get back to me letting me know they’re proceeding with a candidate that applied earlier than me. I email back thanking them for the kindness and openness and mentioning I saw a different position open I think I’d be a great fit for. At that time, I had a “connection” with the recruiter and felt it could be of my advantage. I let them know I was not in a rush as I’m currently employed but im genuinely interested in joined them and if they think I’m still at a right time to apply. I then applied to the position and am holding for feedback..

Should I have taken the no and moved on? Should I have waited for confirmation prior to applying again?
