Refuting common arguments made against islam 2/2

Religious talk

This ones gonna be about apostasy law,

What People Think Apostasy Law Is In the modern imagination, “apostasy law” is portrayed as: • A death sentence for simply changing one’s religion. ° A cruel punishment that suppresses freedom of thought. ° An outdated relic compared to today’s notions of liberty.

This is a shallow reading. Just as with slavery, the reality in Islam is vastly more nuanced and merciful.

Context in Early Society In 7th-century Arabia, “religion” was not a private opinion. It was citizenship, allegiance, and political identity. When someone left Islam at that time, it wasn’t just a change of belief. It often meant: Betraying the Muslim community. Joining enemy forces. Leaking military secrets. Sparking internal rebellion. Apostasy was therefore not treated as “personal disbelief” but as political treason in wartime.

(How would the state know youre an apostate in the first place unless you do smth publicly, and treason is punishable by death in many countries, thats due to political reasons)

The Prophet’s ﷺ Example

The Prophet ﷺ never executed someone merely for doubting or privately disbelieving. The Qur’an itself says:

“Indeed, those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe again, then disbelieve, then increase in disbelief—Allah will not forgive them.” (Qur’an 4:137) Meaning: people were leaving and re-entering faith freely, yet the Qur’an addressed them spiritually, not legally.

Infact even when some non muslim fakes to be a muslim during battle, hes still to be given protection and spared,

Bukhari and muslim quote the hadith in which hazrat umar killed a man that accepted islam before he was gonna get killed,

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Did you kill him in spite of his professing La ilaha illallah?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He said out of fear of our arms." He (ﷺ) said, "Why did you not cut his heart open to find out whether he had done so sincerely or not?" He continued repeating it until I wished that I had embraced Islam only that day.

Even he was supposed to spared let alone apostates.

The punishment only applied when apostasy was tied with open treason, rebellion, or active war against the Muslim state.

Hadith Clarification The famous hadith,

“Whoever changes his religion, kill him.” (Sahih Bukhari) must be read in context. In the Prophet’s time, apostasy equaled joining the enemy in active war. That is why scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah and others, clarified that it refers to political apostasy (ḥirābah)not private disbelief.

Islamic Mercy in Practice Many people left Islam during the Prophet’s ﷺ life without punishment if they kept it personal. Hypocrites lived openly in Medina, disbelieving in their hearts and mocking Islam, yet the Prophet ﷺ did not kill them. Why? Because they were not taking up arms or betraying the Muslim community.

This shows Islam differentiates between freedom of conscience and treason disguised as apostasy.
