Advice on painting an artext ceiling following bad experience

Painting

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice please.

I own a house built in the late 90s with artext ceilings. A few months back I decorated the first room since we moved in. When I painted the ceiling the first coat went on fine, but as I started the second coat it started peeling large areas of the artex directly off the plasterboard in huge chunks as I was rolling. It was like the wet paint had soaked in and the weight had just lifted it clean off the plasterboard. It didn't seem to be the whole ceiling that was effected, but approx 50% in large patches.

What was supposed to be a quick job resulted in the ceiling needing to be reboarded and skimmed (at least it got rid of the artex I guess!).

I am now planning on decorating the next room and want to try and avoid the same issue. The plasterer who I used for the ceiling said it was possible that area(s) of the ceiling just hadn't been primed properly before it was artexed and this is why it came away. He wasn't really sure why it happened though and just advised me to board on top and skim.

My theory (or at least part of the reason it happened), is the paint I used. It was a big tub of Dulux which I bought from B&M. I had (wrongly) presumed that Dulux was a sign of quality, but it was extremely watery and thin. I guess Dulux etc sell low quality versions of their paint in places like B&M, I won't make that mistake again! I wondered whether it had soaked in and pulled it away.

Can anyone provide any advice as to how to avoid this again please? Or any particular paints which might be better to use? There are loads of good reviews for the Leyland Trade Contract, but as this is pretty cheap I'm worried it might be thin again and cause the same issue.

In my previous house I used Polycell's flexible paint which is designed to cover/fill small cracks on a cracked ceiling. It was really thick and heavy and to be fair it did a pretty good job at covering the cracks. I was wondering if this might be good to use as maybe it won't soak in as much, but on the other hand the extra weight might cause the same problem I had with the thin paint. It's also pretty expensive so might be overkill.

Any advice appreciated or experience of other people that had this issue with a ceiling appreciated!.

Thanks
