Weird cough with bacterial tonsillitis, should I be worried ?

Physician Responded

Hi everyone.

I (20F) was diagnosed with bacterial tonsillitis yesterday and started antibiotics (amoxicillin) because my tonsils are kinda big and i am already voiceless (litterally, i cant speak).

Today, I noticed that when I try to cough, it doesn’t sound like a “normal” cough. Instead, it’s really muffled, almost like the sound gets stuck, and the cough itself barely comes out. It also feels hard to force a cough, unlike the usual strong, harsh cough that irritates the throat that i can have when my throat is irritated.

This is the first time I’ve ever had tonsillitis, so I’m a bit worried. Is this normal with swollen tonsils, or should I be concerned and call a doctor? Also, is it dangerous to go to sleep if I can’t cough properly ?

Thanks in advance
