Could this be autism?
I've always had some difficulties with interpersonal relationships, such as often ticking people off without know why, having relationships end mysteriously, and finding it hard to make new friends, but have overall gotten by socially and professionally. I mostly associated with those I knew through school, work, shared neighborhood, and clubs, especially through shared physical interests such as hiking, dancing, and traveling where the focus and conversation was more on the activity itself versus random unrelated one-on-one small talk. Now that, due to a physical disability, I can no longer partcipate in those, I find I've lost touch with all those friends and am at a loss as to how to make new ones. It seems I need the buffer of that physical pursuit to deflect from the pressure of having to keep up mundane conversation constantly. Unfortunately, no other interests appeal to me.
