AITA for wanting to separate over a watch?
My wife and I both from a single parent families, and I think that’s part of the reason why we clicked so well but were completed opposites. She’s the straight A student, never parties, never drinks type while I’m everything but. Her family didn’t exactly accept me at first but I worked really hard to prove myself.
Eight years ago, her mom retired and decided to move closer to us because her older brother had kids. Ours came shortly after. With our Asian background, her brother is considered head of the family. For example, my wife would serve her brother first at dinner despite having his wife sit right next to him. His wife also prioritizes him over their own kids to a point where she would leave her kids with my MIL at all times, just to be alone her husband.
Naturally, my wife would worried about her mom and ask me to take care of her by cooking and watching her brother’s kids so my MIL can rest. When her mom stays with us, it’s really to recharge. At first, I didn’t mind cause our kids could play together and it made my wife happy by having her family constantly around. Suddenly, we were stuck watching their brother’s kids almost everyday while they went on dates, outings, trips, etc. Because they’re left with my MIL, they’re spoiled rotten to a point I started keeping my kids away. I constantly have to explain to my kids why their cousins could do whatever they wanted and they couldn’t.
Anyways, my wife had a work trip in the East. I decided to tag along cause there was a conference I wanted to attend and I could meet up with some friends. My wife works in luxury retail and often said she wanted to get my Rolex for my 30th birthday. Her boss who resides in the East had hinted to us that she has a surprise for us. Since I already own one, I only had two models in mind. If it wasn’t one of those, she could pass the watch to her brother who has been constantly asking for one. Her sister in law too. He has a list of 6 other models.
We had an appointment and went to the store. They brought out the one I wanted. Before I could react, my wife called her brother right away saying she bought him a watch. I was stunned. To make things worse, because her boss pulled some strings, we had to have dinner with her where I had to pretend the watch was mine, fake a smile and repeatedly thank her for the favor. On our way to the restaurant, my wife kept rubbing it in, saying how generous I was, how I should take a photo for memories and how if it was a Chanel bag, she wouldn’t give it up at all. Later, when she found out that it was the hardest watch to get, she felt guilty, asked her mom if she could help get me one and asked me if I was okay having the same watch.
