Are non-standalone displays worth it?

I've been using up the space is my standalone. I'm not sure if I should purge as much as possible, which would include my some of my art that's all i've used it for, or if there is an upgrade. From what I've seen non-standalones seem to be able to stand more, because they are hooked up to pc's and such. Is there a better option to this situation?
