"The world isn't fair? That's all you have for me?"
"The world isn't fair? I thought the whole point of you, the whole fucking point of one for all, was to be the guy who tells the world 'I am here' and makes it fair. What a pile of shit."
Izuku turned his back on Toshinori, walking over to his bag and getting fresh bandages for his bleeding knuckles.
"I saw the press conference. A tragic accident in the line of duty. They gave the heroes on the scene a one-month paid suspension. Paid! They're paying them to sit on their asses for getting one of my friends killed! The sidekicks for a written reprimand. A fucking strongly worded letter! Kinoko, who was just trying to be a hero -- a better hero than any of them -- is fucking dead because of them! And you know the worst part?" he continued, "I keep thinking, if I'd been faster, if I'd just gone with her, I could have held it. I could have held the ceiling up. I could have gotten her out. It should have been me."
"Don't you dare say that." Toshinori said, his voice finally finding some old strength. "That is a burden no hero should carry. It was not your fault."
"Then whose fault is it?!" Izuku roared, shoving tear-streaked face close to his mentor's. "Tell me! Who do I get to be angry at? The villain is in Tartatus. The heroes who fucked up are on vacation. Kinoko's parents get a medal and a check from the commission to shut them up. So who gets the blame, All Might?! Who pays for this!? Because right now it feels like the only person who paid are the ones who have to go back to class and see her empty fucking desk every single goddamn day!"
Toshinori felt a cold dread creep up his spine. "Young Midoriya, what are you thinking?"
The look in his eyes made Toshinori flinch. The light was gone. The bright hopeful boy was gone.
"I'm thinking that you were wrong. You told me a hero is someone who saves people with a smile. But how can you smile when the world is this rotten? Kinoko didn't die because of a villain, she died because of the system. A system that focused more on merchandising and getting the photograph than checking a building was empty."
He walked toward the door. "So I'm not going to move on, I'm not going to forget, and I'm not going to smile."
