New to Singapore seeking advice after tense encounter near condo gate

General

Hi everyone, I’m looking for guidance from this community.

TLDR: New to Singapore. I got into a verbal argument with a driver near a condo entrance when I wasn’t at fault. He likely called the police. What should I do next?

I’m a successful Canadian technology entrepreneur of Indian origin who just moved to Singapore to set up Asia operations for my new company. EDB encouraged me to come on a special pass to support entrepreneurship in Singapore.

Earlier this week I went to the Botanic Gardens with my wife and our two kids under 10. Around 7 pm it was dark and my 6 year old got scared and started crying. We were on the road outside the Botanic Gardens and I booked a Grab.

With my daughter crying nonstop, I picked the nearest pickup point in the app and walked toward it while calling the driver through the Grab app. I was focused on the map and my family behind me. I didn’t realize that following the driver led into a condo driveway and the driver had gone inside.

As soon as I entered the complex, the condo security guard shouted from outside his cabin for us to leave. Wanting to exit as soon as possible while avoiding the condo security guard, I started to exit through the car gate. At the same moment a car entered with a fob and almost hit me. Startled and worried about where my kids were, I instinctively tapped the front fender to get the driver’s attention and stop.

The driver, a man about 50s, got out, shouted at us, and moved toward me. When I said he almost hit me, he became more aggressive. He asked if I was Singaporean and told me to go back to my country. Both my kids were crying. After some argument where he abused me and my family - I started to walk away from the situation with my family. He started following us on the street, while on the phone, likely with the police. During this whole interaction, we did not touch each other.

My priority at that point is to protect my family. Luckily a taxi appeared, who was going to the airport for a pickup. We convinced him that if he drops us to our home, we will pay him extra. My son cried the whole way and he kept losing his breath (he has asthma). The nice taxi driver only charged us for the fare, but my wife insisted on giving him 10 SGD extra.

At home I called the non-emergency police line for guidance. They said I could file a report at a police station if I wanted. Apart from that, they have no other guidance.

Right now we are shaken and thinking of returning to Canada soon. I’m looking for practical steps to protect my family and handle this properly. How do I find out if a police report was filed. How should I respond? Should I engage a lawyer? I’m willing to spend whatever it takes to resolve this and protect my name and my family.
