My biggest Music and the Spoken Word memory: an unfortunate accident
About a decade ago (I honestly don't remember the exact day), I had the opportunity to go to Music and the Spoken Word in-person in the Tabernacle. I don't remember the songs sung or what Mack Wilberg said, but I will never forget that scream.
During the Gently Raise the Sacred Strain opening, the ground level boom camera operator stepped backwards too far, beyond the edge - and fell off. Everyone heard a woman scream, and every single one of the audience stood out of their seats to see what happened. The choir and organ stopped, but everybody somehow kept a perfect beat, resuming when they were supposed to without a delay.
I remember seeing a second camera operator get up, get back down, and then a third camera operator take over. A couple minutes later, there was an ambulance outside the tabernacle, no sirens. At the end of the show, Mack did say that that was unfortunate and a genuine accident, and he hoped that it didn't ruin the show for everyone.
Through the grapevine, I heard that the second person who got up was the cameraman's wife, and she was in so much shock, she knew she couldn't stably operate the camera, so the third person took over. The cameraman thankfully only got bruising, no brain damage despite being knocked unconscious. I also found out that the opening is pre-recorded, so nobody watching over TV heard her scream; they only switch to the live feed after the introduction.
I really don't have any deep message this time; I just wanted to share and record a memory.
