Tough Teacher (In local Sangha)

Vajrayana

I joined a Sangha about 8 months ago with my GF and this teacher is in a Tibetan lineage.

I have a practice down I've been doing for 27 years and never intended to get a teacher. I decided to join for Sangha and weekly meditation, although my practice is pretty engrained. I never intended to have a teacher, nor do I need one at this point, I have unwavering faith and know the path forward, practicing Theravada- but when the opportunity for a 1day retreat came up, my GF and I went for it.

During the retreat, the teacher told us to keep our eyes down and it went fine, until the interviews. We both went in to be interviewed and the teacher seemed needlessly tough. He asked us some basic questions and was very critical looking for specific answers (i.e. like the word "seeing" as opposed to "awareness"), was critical of us and told not to look him in the eye. He was critical of some minor things and it all just seemed a little much.

My GF defied his orders and observed to expression of the "Students" as they came out, and most of the long term students were crying and they've been doing it for years and we were new. We both found it quite a bit much and excessively nit-picky for no reason what so ever.

I tried to tell him a bit of my practice and history, etc, being a teach and he just cut me off when I started, if I can't tell him "where I'm at" in my practice, how can I expect to have good instruction....

I've never had a teacher, nor do I need one, IDT we're going to supplicate ourselves to a person with such a verbose and excessively harsh and critical way of teaching, that lacks a gentleness or mindful listening component.

Is this teacher a wrathful teacher? I know some TIBETAN teachers cop a similar style in order to help "dissolve the ego" but I can see how that can lead to abuses, he's a lay teacher too. We are likely going back but don't want him as a teacher.
