New home for us
Hi everyone! I'm a single mom (40, Hispanic) making a huge, and hopefully final, move for my family, and I could really use your city and neighborhood recommendations. We are currently in a Florida suburb, but we need to transplant somewhere that aligns better with our social, medical, and financial needs.
I’m moving with my 19-year-old (working fast food, doing college online) and my 9-year-old. While my kids are Caucasian, we are a diverse family and need to settle in a community that is definitively blue/progressive, diverse, and genuinely welcoming. I don't mind political diversity, but I absolutely need to avoid areas with overt racism or aggressive political extremism like the MAGA cult.
I absolutely love the energy, culture, and incredible food scene of a big city, but my kids have only known suburban life. We're looking for that sweet spot: a vibrant, mid-sized city or a well-connected, diverse suburb of a large metro area. We are huge on the outdoors: great parks, and natural scenery are all major pluses. We also love festivals, farmers' markets, and just generally being around fun, family-enriched community events.
Our Non-Negotiable, Hard Requirements:
- Healthcare is #1: My 9-year-old has significant medical needs: Type 1 Diabetes and Asthma. We must be within a quick and easy drive of a Level 1 Trauma Center and a Major Children's Hospital known for excellent, comprehensive pediatric endocrinology and pulmonology/asthma care. This is a matter of safety and quality of life.
- Airport Proximity: I am an airline employee, so I need to be within a 45-minute commute of a major airport hub. I need to get to my work hub on a direct, one-flight basis.
- Financial Reality: This is where I need help finding the magic cities! I plan to sell my Florida home to finance this move. My absolute maximum budget for buying a 2 to 3-bedroom home/townhouse is $450,000. My max comfortable rent for a large 2-bedroom is $2,000/month. I know this rules out a lot of the high-cost-of-living blue-state cities.
- Transit and Schools: Excellent public schools are necessary for the 9-year-old. My oldest relies on public transit, so we need safe, reliable buses or rail, or an area where short-distance ride-shares are affordable. I don't mind driving but this will give her more flexibility.
Where can we find this progressive, medical-friendly, outdoorsy, and affordable home? I’m hoping to make this our last move. Thank you in advance for any and all specific neighborhood, city, and suburb suggestions!
