So a while back I adopted this bird from my grandpa, who could no longer take care of it. We’ve gotten used to each other by now, he starts to like me and I start to like him and have become a lot less annoyed by the fact he interups me when I’m watching tv or have guests over, because he likes to join in on the conversation.

When I’ve been away from home for a couple of hours he’s very excited that I’m back and starts chatting for a while. When I try to sleep in he won’t let me as he’ll start calling at 8AM until I give him attention. He’ll also do that when I leave the room for a couple of hours to clean or shower or whatever.

I cannot be there all the time for him, so I am thinking about getting him a friend. I’ll probably have to deal with more noise and it will cost me more money in food and sola balls. But I want him to be happy. My main doubt right now is wether or not it will make my gecko unhappy as he’s already been coming out less since the bird moved in with us.

It’s all temporary as I am planning on rehoming the bird after my grandparents pass away. But this could easily take one or two or even more years. So until then the bird stays with me, so that my grandparents can die happy thinking the bird stays in the family. But I don’t want the bird to feel lonely in the mean time. He’s spend his entire 3 year life alone at my grandparents house and I want to give him a better life.

So I have a few questions about potentially bringing in a friend for him:

• How much noise do two birds produce? As in, will they be talking with each other the entire day? Or will they have quiet moments as well?

• Should I bring in a female or male friend for him? I don’t them to mate and have read on how to discourage hormonal behavior. But I also want to increase the chance of them liking each other and I don’t know how two males would behave.

• Is it ok if he is 3 y/o and (the potential) she only 1 y/o? Or would it be best to get a bird closer to his age range?

• Is my cage big and enriching enough to house two birds?

• Do I need two separate food bowls and water bowls when keeping two birds in the same cage? Or do they share the same food and water bowl?

Should I get another bird and is this cage suitable for two?
