Investing outside big markets
Hey r/pokeinvesting,
I've been following this sub for a while and I'm fascinated by the contrast between the market in the US and what I see here in Chile. While many of you struggle to find modern sealed products at MSRP, the situation here is completely different. I can consistently walk into retail stores and find plenty of stock.
For instance: Sleeved booster packs for around 6.500CLP (7 USD) Booster Bundles (6 packs) for $32 USD
This seems like a great entry point. However, there's a significant catch when it comes to the secondary market for single cards, which makes me question the whole strategy.
For buying and selling singles locally, everyone uses TCGPlayer for price references. The problem is, the community uses an informal USD-to-CLP conversion rate that is 10-20% lower than the actual market exchange rate. For example, if a card is $100 on TCGPlayer, instead of selling for the direct equivalent in CLP, it sells for a price reflecting an exchange rate that's 10-20% weaker. This effectively devalues all single cards in our local market and makes ripping packs to sell hits much less profitable.
This brings me to my main question: is this a worthwhile investment opportunity?
On one hand, easy access to sealed products at a fair price is a huge advantage. On the other, the suppressed local singles market and the potentially lower demand for sealed products in the future make me nervous.
For those who invest outside the major markets (US, EU, Japan): Does the easy availability of sealed product outweigh a weaker local secondary market? With a local singles market like this, is the only viable exit strategy to hold sealed for 5-10 years and then sell internationally (factoring in high shipping costs)? Are these prices still a good entry point for a long-term sealed hold, despite the local market conditions? I'm hesitant because while the acquisition part is easy, the path to a profitable exit seems very unclear.
Any advice or perspective, especially from other international investors dealing with similar market quirks, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
