Remote Access via tailscale

I’m running Home Assistant on a mini server via Proxmox and I’d like to access it remotely through Tailscale. I’ve seen a bunch of tutorials about this online.

I’ve installed the Tailscale add-on in Home Assistant and the Tailscale app on my Android phone. Both are connect to my tailscale network and both devices show up in Tailscale with a green dot.

I can access Home Assistant in my phone’s browser using http://[tailscale IP]:8123, but the Companion App on the same phone won’t connect. I guess it keeps trying to use the local IP address. When it fails, i try to tap “Update external URL,” but nothing happens.

In the app settings, I’ve set the Tailscale address as the external URL — and if I copy that same URL into my browser, Home Assistant loads just fine.

Any idea what might be wrong or what I’m missing?
