Pool Safety - Gate or No Gate?

Advice Needed

I’d welcome comments from all users!

So I'm working with a family who has a huge house with a pool. Well, we were talking and I told them that I didn't know how to swim and didn't feel comfortable taking the little girl out to swim - ever. I won't ever do it. It's a HUGE phobia of mine (drowning or attempted drowning). They said by June of next year she will be 3.5 and will have taken enough swimming classes to swim on her own. Still, I said if I am to care for her alone, she cannot swim on those days because I do not think I could save her if she were to need help.

Well the mother said she understood and then she asked me a very important question: should she get a pool gate installed? The one she is looking at is a foot taller than her and is simple enough for an adult to use. She said the death of TikTok star Emilie Kiser’s son influenced her to do her research. She said she didn’t really see the dangers beforehand but after the story was everywhere she felt she needed to protect her baby. I told her I think she should absolutely get a gate!

I guess what I’m looking for advice on is when does it become overbearing from a family to a nanny? I felt like she kept trying to get me comfortable with the idea of swimming with her daughter but I am firm in saying no. She asked about the gate and then said she assumed that if she had one I’d feel more comfortable around the idea of swimming with her? Even though I already said no. 🙂 idk.. lol

Some questions for the Nannie’s:

  1. Pool gate or no gate and why?
  2. what was an event either major or minor that shaped the way you nanny with families?
  3. If you can swim - are you comfortable in the pool with your nanny kids?

My question for parents:

  1. what has something a nanny has told you or done or even an event that has happened that changed the way you hire/operate around nannies? If they were to say no to a recreational activity would it be a deal breaker? if you own a pool
  2. Is your child currently taking swimming lessons?
  3. Do you own a pool gate?
